The Edge Of Time Grinnell
It's interesting to compare this second album by French electro producer Yuksek with Moby's latest, Destroyed. Both were inspired by the sense of dislocation that being on tour produces, but while Destroyed is swamped by melancholy, Living on the Edge of Time finds that the best cure for loneliness is to bound off in a pop direction, with the emphasis on optimism and giddy choruses. Though Yuksek composed and sings every track, these aren't one-man-and-a-laptop productions – his Reims schoolfriends Bewitched Hands and the Shoes pitch in, turning them into arena-seeking anthems. The jaunty piano riff running through Always on the Run gives it an earworm quality that takes hours to dislodge; White Keys achieves lift-off from combining persistent synth buzz and a catchy hook sung by a choir. Fireworks is the clubbiest thing here, but its sumptuous electronic flow is still – like the rest of this pleasing album – dance-pop at its most enjoyably commercial.
